What a mock is - and what it is not

The official driver theory test is a computer exam at an RSA centre. You book it on theorytest.ie, show ID, and get a pass or fail that NDLS can see. A mock is practice software that copies that shape: the same style of multiple-choice questions, a clock, and a score at the end.

A mock pass does not count toward a learner permit. A mock fail does not stop you booking the real test. Treat the score as feedback, not as an official result. Book only through the Road Safety Authority - never through a practice site that claims to take official bookings.

How to sit a mock so it actually helps

Sit it like the real thing. Start the clock, put the phone away, and do not look up answers mid-exam. If you pause every question to read an explanation, you are doing category practice, not a mock. Use one-question practice when you are learning; use a full mock when you want to test recall under time.

Skip hard items and come back, the way you will at the centre. Watch the clock without rushing. Car and motorbike mocks are 45 minutes for 40 questions; truck and bus mocks are 2 hours for 100 questions. Guessing every unknown in the last few minutes is better than leaving blanks - the official test scores correct answers only.

Do not book the official sitting on the back of one lucky mock. Aim to finish comfortably above the pass mark more than once, on different days, without notes. For car and motorbike that means above 35 out of 40; for truck and bus, above 74 out of 100.

How to read the score

The number out of 40 or 100 is the headline. The useful part is the category breakdown. If signs are strong and vulnerable road users are weak, drill that weak category before the next timed mock. Repeating full mocks without fixing the gaps just rehearses the same mistakes.

When to switch from practice to mocks

Start with short practice: one topic at a time, explanations on, a note of every rule you miss. When those category scores are consistently strong, switch to full mocks so you practise changing topic under the clock.

In the last week before an official booking, sit two or three mocks and re-read the Rules of the Road sections that match your weakest areas. Stop cramming new material the night before. On the real day, arrive early, use the on-screen tutorial, flag uncertain questions, and review them before you submit.
