Use your pass certificate while it is valid

You get your result at the test centre as soon as you finish. A pass gives you a Driver Theory Test certificate for that vehicle category. It is valid for two years from the date you sat the test. If you have not applied to the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) for your first learner permit within those two years, you will need to sit and pay for the theory test again.

Keep the paper certificate if you are given one, but you usually do not need to upload or hand it in. NDLS has an electronic record of the result. Online first-permit applications are typically available from the next working day after you pass.

Apply for your learner permit

You cannot start lessons or drive on a public road until you hold a valid learner permit for that category. Apply through NDLS - online with a Public Services Card and verified MyGovID, or in person at an NDLS centre. You will need a recent theory pass in the matching category, plus the ID, address, residency, eyesight, and medical documents listed for your case. The first-permit fee is set by NDLS and is currently €45 for most applicants; confirm the amount and document list on ndls.ie before you apply.

The permit must match the theory test you passed - for example category B for a car, or AM for a moped or light motorbike. Wait for the physical permit before you book an Approved Driving Instructor or take a car on the road. Learners must display L-plates and cannot drive unaccompanied or on motorways.

Complete training and wait out the 6-month rule

Car learners who got a first category B permit on or after 4 April 2011 must complete Essential Driver Training (EDT): 12 one-hour sessions with an Approved Driving Instructor, or a reduced programme if you qualify. Your instructor uploads each session to MyEDT. Motorbike learners complete Initial Basic Training (IBT) instead, and the IBT certificate must still be valid for the category you will be tested in.

First-time car and motorbike permit holders must also have held that first permit for at least six months before they can sit the practical driving test. You can apply for a test earlier, but the RSA will not invite you to book until the six-month wait is finished and your training record is complete. Use the months in between to practise with your instructor or a qualified accompanying driver - that gap is the point of the rule, not dead time.

What to expect on practical test day

The practical driving test is a later appointment at a driving test centre, not a follow-on from the computer theory exam. Bring a valid learner permit and a roadworthy, taxed, NCT-valid (if required), and insured vehicle with L-plates. Arrive early and wait inside the centre - not in the car. Category B tests are often around an hour; the RSA says the full appointment can run from about 50 to 100 minutes depending on the vehicle category.

The test starts with an oral part in the centre: questions on the Rules of the Road, identifying road signs, and demonstrating hand signals. The examiner then takes you to the vehicle. There you explain how you would carry out a few technical checks chosen on the day - typically things such as tyres, lights, engine oil, coolant, washer fluid, brakes, or the horn, and you may need to open the bonnet. Inside the car you adjust the seat and mirrors, then show how to operate secondary controls such as wipers, lights, demisters, fans, or fog lights. Left and right turns are assessed later, during the drive, not as a separate quiz at the car.

The on-road part usually includes reversing around a corner, a turnabout, a hill start, and a drive of about 8 km in mixed traffic. Your instructor is the right person to rehearse the checks on the actual car you will use. After a pass you receive a certificate of competency and can apply for a full driving licence.
